Amy Ross: How CLT Changed Me Forever

I started looking forward to my CLT trip when I was a first year camper.

However, when my time finally came to experience CLT I found myself completely unprepared for the two weeks that followed.

CLT bible studies are designed to be intense and challenging. I was asked questions about my faith that I had never even thought about. I quickly realized that my well-rehearsed Sunday school answers were not going to cut it here. For the first time in my life someone was asking me not only what I believed but why I believed.

A turning point on my trip was when I shared a kayak with one of our wilderness guides. I had what seemed like endless hours to hang out with a girl that I had decided was the coolest person I had ever met. She asked me hard questions that forced me to wrestle with the “why” of my faith. The talk we had while kayaking down a river completely changed my understanding of what I thought I knew about God. She helped me to verbalize my beliefs and articulate my why.

By the end of the CLT I understood the power of why. The weight of the Gospel is in the why. It’s in the motivation behind God’s actions and in the love that drives his sacrifice. On CLT I realized my identity in Christ. I left camp that year not only with amazing memories and lifelong friends, but with a new-found confidence in my creator and redeemer.

I have had the privilege of leading CLT twice now as a summer staffer and I can confidently say I am convinced of the power of this program. You can’t be a part of it without getting the sense that everything you are doing is part of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. There is something special about getting teenagers away from the distractions of the world in order to study scripture in the midst of God’s creation that encourages unprecedented spiritual growth. Year after year CLT teaches both campers and counselors about his profound, captivating love and in the process leaves everyone who experiences CLT changed.
