Meet Compass: Kaela Kirk

Name: Kaela Kirk

Age: 19

Hometown: Woodlands, TX

One Interesting fact about me: I’m adopted, being adopted really is an important part of my life. The fact that someone chose me to be a part of their family no matter the circumstances is a huge part of who I am today. I’m really thankful for the parents I have and their love and support. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them.

Why did you sign-up for Compass? There are many reasons why I wanted to sign up for Compass but I’m just going to point out the main ones. Ever since I was 17 I didn’t really know what to do as my major so I thought taking this gap year would be a good opportunity to try different things and find out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I also wanted to grow closer to God, I used to be so on fire for God the beginning of sophomore year of high school and got drawn into peer pressure and distanced myself from God. Taking this Gap year I thought it would be good to start really trusting him through everything. I’m excited about praying and spending more time with him through morning lauds and evening compline and helping out with our churches that we have interned at.

This time next year what do you want to say about your Gap Year Experience? This time next year I would like to say about this Gap year experience was the best thing I got to be apart of with 23 other people. This year has really shown me what it means to be a true Christian and to be a true friend to my housemates. Being able to be part of something bigger than myself and truly living a life for Christ and showing his grace and mercy through everything in the past 9 months. One of my favorite things about this program out of 100 other things that I love about Compass is the opportunity to “Step outside your comfort zone.” I’m hoping to be able to just be myself, respect how God has made me, using my talents, and showing the world what God is really made of.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about taking a Gap Year?I would tell them to do it. Taking a gap year will be one of things you will never ever regret. You really get to find who you are through Christ. Living in community will help you to be better and to accept yourself as you are. In this gap year you really get to learn a lot of awesome things that you will need to know how to do and  get outside your comfort zone to do better and greater things that God has called you to do.
