The start of a new school year can mean a lot of transitions. New schools, new teachers, new classmates and even new backpacks…everything can seem different in the Fall. While some people love change, all of these changes at once can bring about feelings of anxiety or nervousness.
One Biblical truth that we can cling to is that God is always with us. While many of us can clearly feel God’s presence while we’re at Camp, it’s important to remember that He is with us ALL the time! In fact, the name Emmanuel means “God with us!” In the NIV version of the Bible, the phrase “do not be afraid” appears over 80 times! So many times throughout Scripture, God commands us to not be afraid because HE is WITH us.
If you’re feeling nervous or alone sometimes, remember God’s promise in James 4:8 “Come near to God and He will come near to you.” Some ways you can draw near to God include praying, reading your Bible, memorizing Scripture, listening to worship music, and spending time in worship and community with other Christians.
Here are some verses you can read, memorize, write on a notecard, or write on your bathroom mirror as a reminder that everyday when you walk into school or a new situation, God is with you!
Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Hebrews 13:6 “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Talk about it:
What is one thing you were nervous about when you first came to Camp? How did you become less nervous?
What are some fears you have about school this year? How can you combat these fears?
Do you believe that God is with you? Talk about a time when you felt His comfort or peace.
What would you tell a friend who was nervous about starting school?
Pray about it:
Lord, we thank you that you alone are the provider of peace. We trust in what your word says and we thank you that you are always with us and that you go before us. Help us to live lives that display your love and peace to the people around us. In your name we pray, Amen.
